Are you concerned about the health of your prostate? Do you have more frequent urination and other bladder problems?
BPH, Benign Prostatic hyperplasia is very common as men grow older and testosterone levels decrease.
Prostate disease, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is where there is enlargement of the prostate. Symptoms may be seen such as changes in bowel habits, bowel or urinary incontinence, constipation or bottom pain. The two main hormones involved are testosterone and oestrogen.
During normal male development of the embryo, the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays an essential role in the formation of the male external genitalia. In the adult male it acts as the primary androgen hormone in the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, skin, and hair follicles. In men, oestrogen is present in low concentrations in blood, but can be very high in semen and it is important for fertility.
As men age, the balance of hormones changes. Testosterone, oestrogen and DHT are all involved. This can result in cell proliferation and benign prostate hyperplasia. However, it is not just your hormones that are to blame. Overweight, poor detoxification, infections, increased insulin, inflammation, stress and poor diet can all contribute prostate disease.
